Moseley Rugby Club: New season, new stand.
Tuesday, 24th February 2015
Moseley Rugby Club are kicking off the new season. The schedule is published, the players are getting ready and the new stand is going up. The club have just celebrated one hundred and forty years as the premier rugby club in Birmingham, Moseley prides itself on so many things but I was not aware of this.
I’ve spent a few days learning more and I’m very grateful to Glyn Barlow at the club for the information and images he contributed.
This season promises to be a good one after the team achieved their best ever finish last year. Last season stood out for a double of Championship victories over Bedford, receiving the prestigious RFU Accreditation Award and their first televised home appearance on Sky TV. For the coming season Moseley has, Glynn says, “high hopes to continue the consolidation of their league position and start a push for the top, with the long term aim of bringing Premiership Rugby to Birmingham.”
They continue under the vastly experienced coaching team of Kevin Maggs (70 caps for Ireland) and Dave Hilton (42 caps for Scotland). The squad, with a few new faces, will be looking to develop their exciting brand of rugby, winning games while entertaining the crowds.
Let’s hope our local team can add to their illustrious history which includes the following pub quiz gems: they have produced 96 internationals, represented Great Britain at the 1900 Olympics and won the EDF Trophy at Twickenham in 2009.
I was pleased to learn that Moseley Rugby Club is more than just the first team. Glyn explained “there are sixteen sides at Billesley Common from the semi-professional Championship team, through Moseley Oak the amateur adult team, under 19 & 17 Colts, Ladies and a thriving Mini & Junior section which sees over 200 children participate every Sunday.”
The 1st XV plays in the Greene King IPA Championship (Level 2 of rugby in England) and participate in the British & Irish Cup. Moseley Oak play in Midlands 2 West North league, Moseley Ladies play in Midlands 2 league and the Colts (U19 & U17) play in Midlands leagues & National cups.
One highlight this year, featured in B13 back in October, is the new stand. Those of you in the area will know the work has begun and the cranes are busy. Work is due to be completed in January and, with the relocation of the existing stand, the ground will boast a seated capacity of 1,400. We’ll keep you updated on this.
Moseley is very much a club for us as the community to get involved in. As fans, players and more there’s plenty going on. Look online (www.moseleyrugby.co.uk) for more information and the dates of upcoming fixtures of all our teams.
All new spectators are most welcome to come along and experience the excellent family friendly atmosphere of Birmingham’s premier rugby club.
Go out and find Moseley Rugby Club, Billesley Common, on Yardley Wood Road.
Get in touch with any questions because I’m sure they’d be delighted to hear from you.
