New buses for the mighty Route 50
Saturday, 26th September 2015
National Express West Midlands has launched a fleet of new ultra low emission buses on the number 50 bus route between Birmingham and Druids Heath. The vehicles, which feature Euro 6 engines, will reduce harmful emissions such as NOx (nitrogen oxides) by 75 per cent and greatly reduce carbon footprint.
The buses will not only improve air quality; they bring a distinctive new look to the region’s roads with fresh livery in a two-tone maroon with complementary cream lines.
The buses are part of a £34 million investment in 171 new vehicles by National Express West Midlands during 2015.
With another new bus arriving every day for the next few months, by September all 171 of the new vehicles will be carrying passengers across the West Midlands.
The investment will enable National Express West Midlands to deliver on the Transforming Bus Travel pledge to deliver 300 new buses over a two-year period.
Peter Coates, Managing Director of National Express West Midlands said: “The new buses we have launched will ensure hundreds of thousands of our customers will have smoother, cleaner and more enjoyable journeys. The buses, which are all built in Britain, have more comfortable seats, better lighting and crystal clear CCTV.”
“Our customers regularly tell us newer buses make for a better journey and that is why we have invested a record amount in new vehicles.”
Centro Chairman, Cllr John McNicholas, added: “This investment in new low emission buses is good for passengers and good for the environment. It is another example of the very real benefits being delivered for bus users by Centro’s innovative Transforming Bus Travel agreement with National Express West Midlands.”
The Transforming Bus Travel: Partnership Plus agreement, which was signed in 2013, is set to deliver more than £83 million of investment for West Midlands bus passengers over two years, including the 300 new buses. It also includes more real-time information, crime-busting CCTV cameras and on-board cleaning.
The deal has landed two major industry awards, taking the Putting Passengers First title at the UK Bus Awards and Partnership of the Year at the National Transport Awards.
