Kings Heath keen to recruit ladies for Hockey section
Wednesday, 30th September 2015
The Kings Heath Ladies Hockey section would like to invite local ladies to get in touch if they are thinking about getting back in to, or starting to play hockey.
The ladies teams include a range of ages – from the younger teens, to those who are in their fifties – and they are calling for more ladies of all ages and abilities to join them ahead of the next season which begins in September 2015.
Research has shown that women may stop participating in sport when they leave school to concentrate on their further studies or careers, or when they have families. Some shy away from returning through lack of confidence, or concerns about their fitness levels. The recent ‘This Girl Can’ campaign aims to combat this and to celebrate active women, whatever their size, ability or previous experience, and to prove that sport can be fun and enjoyable.
A number of ladies in Kings Heath’s Hockey section hadn’t played for a number of years but have rekindled their love of the sport by starting again. It was a 31 year break for Jane Fellows before she joined Kings Heath Ladies, and her only regret is that she didn’t do it sooner.
Jane said: “The last time I had played properly was at university 31 years ago. I was 50 when I got back into hockey in 2013 and people thought I was mad, but I’m so glad I did. I only wish I’d done it sooner! It keeps me fit, nurtures my competitive spirit, and the best part is that I’ve met some wonderful people”.
The Kings Heath Hockey Ladies teams are playing matches in the Olton Summer League for Division 2 and are currently top of the table.
Kings Heath Sports Club also has men’s and children’s hockey teams.
